The Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the Apple iPad 2 is one of those clever gadgets that just might be the answer to sooo many prayers. This portable external keyboard for the iPad 2 is sure to be one of the best iPad 2 accessories available.

OK. You’ve got your Apple iPad2 and all is good with the world.

Except for typing into an application. Sure, their on-screen virtual keyboard is great for quick simple typing tasks. But, when you need to do some serious typing … well, it comes up a little short. Maybe the better word is ‘tedious’. What you are yearning for is a keyboard. A keyboard where your fingers fit on the keys. A real full size keyboard.

My Kingdom for an honest-to-God keyboard!!!

Well, you need to check out the much talked about and highly praised Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the Apple iPad 2.

It snaps to the back of the iPad 2, acting like a case or shell hiding behind or containing (and protecting) your tablet when the keyboard is not in use. It weighs about 19 ounces. So, with the Logitech Fold-Up keyboard attached, the weight of the iPad 2 is pretty much doubled. However, the whole thing is just about as convenient and ergonomic as the iPad 2 by itself. When you want to use the keyboard, just push a button, and the Logitech device opens transformer-like into a full-size keyboard which holds the iPad at an ideal angle for typing and taking notes. Unlike many Bluetooth keyboards, the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard is an actual full-sized keyboard for comfortable typing.

Here’s an introduction to and quick review of the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard:

This Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the iPad 2 is just too slick for words. Closed, the keyboard rests securely underneath your iPad 2 and contains it like a case. You still have access to the iPad 2 screen so you can work with it like you normally do.

Open, it holds iPad 2 at an ideal angle for typing and taking notes.

CNET Review of the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard

CNET gives the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the Apple iPad 2 a rating of 3.5 Stars out of 5, a “Very Good”. They loved its “ingenious design” with the transformer-like fold-out keyboard, but were not as pleased with the actual keyboard. The case holds the iPad 2 snugly and with the keyboard folded up, it becomes like a thick shell case for the iPad tablet. In CNET’s opinion, the plastic keyboard feels flimsier than other Logitech iPad keyboards. See the video above for more details. They sum it up by stating that “Logitech’s unique Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad 2 seems perfect for an executive desk, turning an iPad into a miniworkstation with eye-opening elegance”.

The Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the iPad 2 unfolds transformer-like to reveal a full size Bluetooth keyboard that easily provides one of the best typing experiences for the iPad.

The Logitech Fold-Up keyboard Bluetooth connection wakes up and is ready to use as soon as it’s unfolded. And it turns itself off automatically when it’s folded to save battery power. It charges over USB, so you never need to worry about replacing batteries.

GadgetReview.com Review of the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard

GadgetReview.com gives the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the Apple iPad 2 a rating of 4.5 Stars out of 5, an “Excellent”. They, too, loved its design with the fold-out keyboard, referring to it as “quite brilliant”. The reviewer at GadgetReview was much more pleased with the actual keyboard than the folks at CNET. They noted that the device is well built and sturdy when closed, but mentioned that “it’s a tad fragile feeling when open”. The reviewer engaged in a typing contest with a friend and was much impressed by the keyboard noting that the “keys are highly responsive and provide great feedback”. He was also impressed with the fact that the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard is a full size keyboard. Typing on the Logitech Fold Up Keyboard was described as “an absolute pleasure”. The bottom line for the GadgetReview reviewer is that “The Logitech Fold Up Keyboard is a massively useful tool for any one that want’s to turn their iPad into a productivity tool. Its fold out keyboard is as enchanting to unfold as it is to type on.”.

Gigaom.com Review of the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard

TheAppleBlog at Gigaom.com has done a nice, but brief, review of the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for the Apple iPad 2. They mention the usual shortcomings of the iPad’s on-screen keyboard, as well as the problem that the add-on keyboard/case combos are limited by the size of the iPad so the keyboards tend to be smaller than normal versions. The site has a 17 second video showing someone opening and closing the Fold-Up Keyboard with the iPad’s smart cover in place so you can see how conveniently the device works with the iPad. This reviewer was very happy with the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard’s full size keyboard. Heck, let me use his exact words …”Typing on the keyboard was a dream. The feel of the keys is close to that of Apple’s Bluetooth keyboard, and was actually much easier to type on for extended period of time.” To sum up this reviewer’s opinion, “serious typists will welcome not having to make the sacrifice between a too-small integrated keyboard or a bulky external. Logitech’s Fold-Up keyboard is the perfect balance between the two extremes, and a welcome addition to the iPad 2 family.”

Network World Toolshed Review

The Toolshed column in Network World magazine by Mark Gibbs offers lots of great advice on computer oriented tools and gadgets. Mark’s article is one of my ‘must-reads’ in that magazine. The November 7, 2011 Article was titled “iPad improvement: A great keyboard and network app”. He talks about his love affair with the iPad and the influx of iPad-related products he receives. He says that some of those products are OK but some are outstanding and one of the winners is the Logitech Fold-Up Wireless Keyboard for the iPad 2. Mark also mentions the usual ease-of-use shortcomings of the iPad’s on-screen keyboard for things like taking notes or editing a document, and how in those situations, you long for a real keyboard. Mark says “The Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad is one of the best solutions I’ve found”. Echoing some other reviewers, Mark’s only complaint related to the “feel” of the key action — “the keys are a little stiff and lightweight”. Like most other reviewers, Mark thinks the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard has “an incredibly clever design”, noting that when folded, the entire iPad and keyboard combination is almost as ergonomic as the “naked” iPad, yet going from pad to keyboard configuration only takes a few seconds and you get a real full-size keyboard. To sum up Mark’s opinion, “around an office where you’re ducking in and out of meetings this is a terriffic alternative to using a separate, detached keyboard … Priced at $129.99 the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad is a little spendy, but it still gets a rating of 4.5 out of 5.”
